In order for the seeker to obtain maximum effort from Dhikr the author of Minhajus Saalik ila Ashraf al Masaalik has suggested that 20 rules be diligently observed. 5 Rules should be observed before Dhikr, 12 During Dhikr and 3 after dhikr.

BEFORE DHIKR

1. Ritual Purity (wudhu).
2. Peace of Mind.
3. Repentence.
4. Seeking spiritual help from one's Shaykh.
5.
Conviction that help from the Shaykh is help from The Holy Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam), which in reality is help from Allah.

DURING DHIKR

6. Sit in the position of tashahhud with one's hands on one's thighs.
7. To perfume oneself and the room.
8. Ensure that one's Exterior clothing and internal fabric is free from any impurity.
9. The room should be dark.
10. One's eyes and ears should be closed to prevent any distraction.
11. To firmly fix one's thought on the presence of one's Shaykh.
12. To Indulge in Dhikr with truthfulness and sincerity.
13. By truthfulness is meant that one should indulge in dhikr solely for the pleasure of Allah.
14. By sincerity is meant that one's actions should be free of hypocritic display (riya).
15. One should concentrate solely on the dhikr being read at the exclusion of any other dhikr.
16. One should impress upon the mind the implication of the meaning of the dhikr being recited.
17. This should induce a state in the reader wherein nothing exists- save Allah.

AFTER DHIKR

18. One should keep silent for a long period of time after Dhikr.
19. One should restarin one's ego (nafs).
20. One should refrain from consuming anything cold as this dissipates the 'heat' created during dhikr.
The most important factors are points 11 and 16, as particular attention to these is essential for the achievement of the desired result.
